When I was a young schoolboy our high school had anti-smoking posters plastered in every classroom with what I thought to be a very good campaign to influence children not to take up smoking. The poster would have a middle aged man or woman with scars, tar, and ulcers all over their face. For the time it was incredibly well done and tremendously horrific. The message of the poster read something along the lines of “If cigarette smoking affected you on the outside like it does on the inside”. It was quite an effective poster- as it is something that has stuck with me all of these years.
So what if a poster was made for alcoholics? What if we could see what alcoholism did to our livers? Well, luckily with the power of Youtube and Dr. Drew we can. Beware, the following video is a bit disgusting.
While this is tremendously disgusting it is a very real and very sobering (cough cough) consequence of alcoholism. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop at the liver. Alcoholism affects your brain, causing your thinking to be slower by interfering with the brain’s communication pathways- along with moodiness and irrational decision making (i.e why so many alcoholic make poor and self-destructive life decisions).
Your immune system is all but shot, leaving you open to all kinds of illnesses and diseases. You have increased risk of pancreatitis, cancer, heart disease, mental issues and a whole list of items that can lead to an eventual painful death. You’re not only susceptible to just one cancer- you’re now increasing your risk for mouth, esophagus, throat, liver and breast cancer. Oh yeah, let’s also not forget impotence. Alcoholism really is a family disease.
But sadly, a poster like the one that hung in my small town high school is not needed. The hard truth of it is alcohol does show on the outside:
